Self-defense doesn’t always call for brutal violence. Sometimes you just need to put a quick stop to an attack, after you ascertain the intentions. People who really want to hurt you are more likely to strike than grab. A grab is an emotional reaction, not a combat tactic. You can put an end to the whole situation with a simple grab of your own.
Once you have detained your opponent, try to de-escalate the situation rather than taking advantage of your position to do your own damage. While this can be a lead-in to an offensive maneuver, it’s really more of a defensive one and most useful when you just want to put an end to the situation.
