Three lawmakers asked the Navy secretary how his service will combat prostitution and trafficking. Senators are demanding immediate action after a troubling report was released depicting sailors profiting off sex-trade in Bahrain.
Kenneth Braithwaite, the Navy Secretary, was called upon in a letter from Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Kirsten Gilibrand, and Tammy Baldwin with several questions, all of which were in regards about how the Navy was going to respond to the charges of sailors attempting to recruit and possess women for sex trade.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) recently had a series of stories published by the Navy Times. The stories detailed the investigation into sailors trafficking Thai women for prostitution work in Bahrain. The women had their passports seized by some sailors and were kept in government-funded housing.
The senators are worried that the recent issues discovered by the NCIS are just the beginning; the problem could be present elsewhere.
