No gun-loving American wants to give up their right to keep and bear arms. But there does come a time in some people’s lives when they simply can’t live life the same way they used to when they were younger. However, some people do get lucky enough to live out their days as healthy people. So, answering the question “how old is too old to carry?” can be a cloudy subject.
Here’s one way to look at it. If someone can fully function both physically and mentally or at least meet the minimum criteria, they should be allowed to do as they please. On the other hand, some people require assisted living services, which means that they may not meet that criterion.
For example, an older person with Alzheimer’s should not have a firearm. Additionally, older people may develop plenty of other mental problems that could make having a gun a potential liability. So, the answer to that question frequently rests in the hands of those around the person in question.
Are they mentally fit? Enough to have a firearm on them at all times? Do they have the ability to operate a gun safely? A “no” answer to any of those questions means they’re probably not fit to conceal carry.
One way to avoid losing your ability to carry a firearm is to stay in good health, both physically and mentally. Proper training is the key to staying fit. Check out these drills to help you safely handle a weapon.
