Like the student in the video, you can save your life and others by knowing what to do. This idea leads us to our first step — do not turn the engine off. Turning it off may be your first instinct. However, doing so cuts all the power to the steering wheel and brake pedal. Likewise, you don’t want to jump out of the car either. It may seem like a good idea at the time, but it could result in the death of yourself or others. So don’t do it.
Now that we’ve covered what not to do, let’s go over what you should do. First, remain calm and alert other drivers of your situation by turning on the hazard lights. You can also honk the horn and wave your hand out the window to get other drivers’ attention.
Next, you need to take the wheel to avoid hitting any obstacles and attempt to get the driver’s foot off of the gas pedal. If you can’t accomplish this feat, you can shift the car into neutral to stop it from gaining speed. You can also pull the emergency handbrake to slow the vehicle down. However, you must do this gradually to avoid locking up the wheels.
Once you get the car to come to a complete stop, be sure to engage the handbrake fully and cut the engine off to prevent it from moving again.
